Some experiences were very brief, usually because the parents abruptly\nstopped services. Other experiences seemed to stretch out like stars against\nthe night sky, and every day with them felt like 1,000 years.\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nBack in the day I used to approach these types of parents\nwith a queasy stomach, sweaty palms, and a lovely tension headache whenever I\nwas in their presence. They made me nervous, made me stammer over my words, or\nworse, left me angrily rehearsing unspoken conversations in my head of what I \u003Ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003Eshould\u003C\/i\u003E have said, or how I \u003Ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003Eshould\u003C\/i\u003E have responded. And of course,\nnothing like THAT parent to make you feel wholly incompetent and like a disgrace\nto your field.\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nFast forward to today as I have a few things I didn’t have\nback then: perspective, increased maturity, and a munchkin of my own. As a\nmunchkin wrangler, do I now understand what it’s like to be a 24-7 advocate for\na child with Autism? No. Do I know what it’s like to navigate IEP’s, special\neducation laws, inclusion classrooms, and the like? No. Have I nearly gone into\nbankruptcy trying to get my little one all the therapies she needs that\ninsurance *coincidentally* won’t cover? Nope. BUT, I can only imagine what\ngoing through all of that might do to my awesome, bubbly personality. ;-)\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nAnd now we have reached my point: There is nothing wrong\nwith being THAT parent. Not only is there nothing wrong with it, we \u003Cb style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"\u003EALL\u003C\/b\u003E have the potential to be \u003Ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003EThat\u003C\/i\u003E parent when it comes to our\nchildren.\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nEven the most sweet, gentle, Happy Happy-Joy Joy parents\nthat I work with have stories to tell me about that “one time” they acted like\nTHAT parent. They ashamedly, or with clearly false bravado, tell me about the\ntime they yelled at their child’s teacher, said the F word in an IEP\nmeeting, or made the ABA therapist cry.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nFor the most part, THAT parent doesn’t enjoy behaving the\nway they sometimes behave. They are not out to get you, and do not actually\ndespise you. They are not intentionally trying to make your job harder, trying\nto get you fired, or trying to make you look bad. Actually it’s the opposite: \u003Cu\u003Ethey\nare more concerned about their child than about you.\u003C\/u\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003EIf fighting for what\ntheir child needs means you get yanked off a case, or receive regular 2 a.m.\nemails from them, or you have to spend 4 hours rewriting the behavior plan they\ndidn’t like, then so be it.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nWhen dealing with THAT parent, it’s helpful to take a step\nback and switch out THAT for \u003Ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003EThis\u003C\/i\u003E:\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cul\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font: 7pt \u0026quot;Times New Roman\u0026quot;;\"\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003EThis parent did not ask to be in the position\nthey are in\u003C\/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003EThis parent may lack a strong support system\nthat also gives them honest feedback on their behavior\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003EThis parent may be having marriage problems\u003C\/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font: 7pt \u0026quot;Times New Roman\u0026quot;;\"\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003EThis parent may be dealing with emotional or\nmental health issues\u003C\/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font: 7pt \u0026quot;Times New Roman\u0026quot;;\"\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003EThis parent may still be carrying guilt about\nprevious experiences where they did NOT speak up\u003C\/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003EThis parent may feel resentful that you can help\ntheir child in ways that they can’t\u003C\/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003EThis parent may not have slept in days because\nthey stay up nights worrying about their child’s future\u003C\/li\u003E\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nMy advice for navigating the choppy waters around THAT\nparent is to choose empathy over offense, to tackle problems\/conflict head on\nand respectfully, and to know when to back off. By “back off”, I mean know when\nto say “Well then I can’t help you”.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nPart of being an ethical professional is being able to\nassess when you are not adding value to someone’s situation. If the working\nrelationship has become more about misunderstandings and heated conversations,\nthen how is that helping the individual receiving services? It really has\nnothing to do with someone being THAT parent: if what you bring to the table is\nnot seen as valuable to the parents\/family, then get out of the way for someone\nelse who could Even for people who\nknow what ABA can do, they usually don’t know how to get started. Most parents\nwho contact me are confused and frustrated, and still emotionally processing the Autism diagnosis. Some parents have told me they wish the\nAutism diagnosis came with a fact sheet, or road map of what to do next. That\nwould be pretty difficult to do. Autism impacts each person differently, and\nan Autism diagnosis is somewhat like a gemstone with many different facets and depths to it.\nThere is no blank “Autism prescription”.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;palatino linotype\u0026quot;;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp;I am \u003Cb\u003Eso-o-o-o\u003C\/b\u003E happy to share this information with a wider\naudience. Information is only helpful when it is shared, so give the\ninformation in this post to anyone you may know who needs ABA therapy but maybe they’ve\nnever heard of it, or don’t know where to start.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;palatino linotype\u0026quot;;\"\u003EI'm going to\ngeneralize a lot in this post because ABA services vary so greatly based on\nlocation, and funding source. Here is a very generic guide of how to begin ABA therapy:\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;palatino linotype\u0026quot;;\"\u003E- The first\nthing you need to do is locate the \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.iloveaba.com\/2012\/10\/choosing-aba-agency.html\"\u003EABA providers\u003C\/a\u003E in your area. There may be\nagencies that send therapists to your home, private Autism schools, or centers\nwhere you drop your child off for therapy. If your child is under 3 there\nshould be free \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.iloveaba.com\/2012\/05\/adventures-in-early-intervention.html\"\u003EEarly Intervention\u003C\/a\u003E services available to you, although\nearly intervention doesn’t always offer ABA.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp;\n\u003C\/span\u003EContact the ABA providers to determine who has availability. It isn’t\nuncommon to contact an agency and be told there is a long waiting list. This can actually be a positive, because it means the company doesn't have adequate staff to cover cases. Instead of cramming a heavy caseload on their staff, a company will start a waiting list and take the time to hire quality staff. If\nthere are no ABA providers in your area, I suggest starting your own \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.iloveaba.com\/2011\/11\/how-to-start-in-home-aba-program.html\"\u003Ein-home ABA program\u003C\/a\u003E, which will include \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.iloveaba.com\/2020\/12\/hiring-bcba.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Ehiring a private BCBA\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;palatino linotype\u0026quot;;\"\u003E-Sometimes if you get a referral or contact individuals through your insurance, the roles of ABA providers are not properly explained. Here is what I mean by that: usually an ABA Therapist and a BCBA do not perform the same tasks.\u0026nbsp; Are there BCBA's who work 1:1 with clients? Sure there are. But typically, if you are new to ABA what you want are \u003Cb\u003EABA direct staff\u003C\/b\u003E first, and then once you have a team in place you want a \u003Cb\u003EBCBA\u003C\/b\u003E to supervise everything and create the treatment plan. \u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;palatino linotype\u0026quot;;\"\u003E- The next\nstep will be securing funding. The provider will inform you if they accept insurance,\nMedicaid, have a sliding fee scale, offer scholarships, or they may even tell you about\ngrants available in your local area. If there are Regional Centers in your\narea, they are the ones who typically pay for ABA so you should contact them\nfirst. If the provider does accept insurance, you may have to secure a pre-authorization for services the funding\nbefore therapy can even start. If you\nlive in an area without ABA mandated services, you will need to locate \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.iloveaba.com\/2012\/03\/paying-for-aba.html\"\u003Efunding sources\u003C\/a\u003E yourself, or possibly pay out of pocket for therapy.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;palatino linotype\u0026quot;;\"\u003E- Now that you\nhave a provider and funding, you are ready to begin ABA therapy. Whether the\nprovider comes to your home, or you take your child to the center\/school, you will need to receive ABA training. For many\nagencies and companies this is mandatory—families cannot begin therapy until\nthey have completed initial family training. If you are working with an\nindependent contractor (they work for themselves, not an agency) then I highly\nrecommend you request initial training from that person. It will be very important that the family learn how to\napply the fundamental techniques of ABA. In order to see the most benefit from\nthe ABA therapy, the family must reinforce what the therapists are teaching.\nThis will be very hard to do without ongoing caregiver training.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;palatino linotype\u0026quot;;\"\u003E- Lastly, what\nis most important about beginning ABA therapy is understanding that ABA is a big\u0026nbsp;commitment. It isn’t something you “\u003Ci\u003Ekinda sorta\u003C\/i\u003E” do.
