I found my job as an RBT mostly by accident. I knew\nthat I wanted to work with children, and I knew I wanted to make a \u003Cu\u003Edifference\u003C\/u\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: .5in;\"\u003E\nI began a Master’s program for Mental Health Counseling, but I knew that\nultimately, I wanted to work in a field that provided therapy for children with\ndisabilities. After a semester of graduate school, unhappy and confused, I\ndecided to go a different direction and look for a different career path. \u0026nbsp;After months of research, I found ABA therapy\nand immediately knew that was where I needed to be. I connected with a local\nbehavior therapy clinic outside of my hometown near Jackson, MS, received a job\noffer, and began training to become a Registered Behavior Technician. At least it did the first\ntime I heard it.\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\n\u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\nMy supervisor had just finished taking\nnotes about the session I had just run with a particularly challenging client.\nThis kiddo was sweet, no doubt, but I learned very quickly that if you didn’t\nhave it together – your emotions, a plan for task presentation, control over\nthe situation – the session could take a nosedive quickly. \u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\nWhat I realized during this session in my\nfirst few months of training is that being prepared is a must. Adaptability –\nthe quality of being able to adjust to new conditions (Lexico.com, 2019) is a\nskill that is most definitely learned on the job. One minute we were at the\ntable working hard at sorting pictures by their category and the next, my sweet\nkiddo was hurling a giant spit wad at my face from across the room. Chairs were\nknocked over, cards and toys were scattered all over the room, and my client\nwas standing on top of the table.\u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\nAll the sudden, my heart rate increased, my\npalms began sweating profusely, I couldn’t breathe and the whole room became\nblurry and it was as if time had stopped. I began asking myself, “What is my\nboss going to think of me?”, “Am I going to get fired?”, and “How could I\npossibly let this happen? I am so stupid!” \u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\nYep. You read that right.\u003Cspan style=\"color: red;\"\u003E\u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\nNot once in that moment did I even think\nabout the client and how I could deescalate the entire situation. I was not\nthinking about the child’s safety or what he could have needed. I was thinking\nabout me. \u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"\u003E\nLuckily my supervisor was there and was all\ntoo familiar with the disruptive and problematic behaviors this child engaged\nin. She quickly deescalated the situation and had him sitting back at the\ntable, working on identifying common objects, compliant and calm as could be,\nin under 10 minutes. \u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nLooking\nback on this and discussing with my supervisor, I realized that this job is a\nselfless one. Walking into a session means leaving yourself – your fears,\nanxieties, stress – at the door. This job is not about you. It is about the\nclient and what he\/she might need to be successful at the skills that we are\nteaching. \u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoListParagraph\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cb\u003E\u003Ci\u003E\u003Cu\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;\"\u003EThis\njob requires confidence – a trait that unfortunately, you do not possess.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/u\u003E\u003C\/i\u003E\u003C\/b\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"\u003EOver the next few months as I\ntrained with a variety of clients with very specific skill deficiencies and\nbehaviors, I learned that confidence means having the ability to go into a\nsession believing in the work that has prepared you for this moment. Confidence\nmeans knowing you’ve got the skills, you are good at what you do, and that you\nare prepared for the unexpected....a\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"\u003End believe me when I say this –\nkids can smell fear from a mile away.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"\u003EIf you go into a session afraid of\nlooking silly or not being quick enough, the child will know. They may possibly\nuse it to their advantage. If you look like you don’t know what you are doing\nor can’t be quick on your feet, your session could go poorly. Eventually I\nbegan to believe it, too. The more sessions I sat in on, the more trials I ran,\nthe more confident I became.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cspan style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"\u003ENow don’t get me wrong, this was a\nlong and grueling process. Some days it felt as if I was just tossed to the\nwolves. I learned to think on my feet and adjust as I went along. I learned\nthat the work that I do is not about me. Sure, I earn a paycheck and have\nfinancial stability and that’s great. However, when I walk into my office, the\nclient lobby, the therapy rooms, my goal is to help my client be successful and\nlearn life skills that will make them happier and healthier. \u003C\/span\u003EI’ve heard so many times from teachers, “But\nhe knows what to do!” and that may or may not be true.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003EBut why are we expecting more of our students\nthen we would want for ourselves? We can make it easier on our students by\nhaving the visuals available for them and this also makes the prompting less\nintrusive.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003EInstead of needing to\nverbally remind them, we can direct them back to their schedule and thus\nremoving the need for constant reminders. \u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003ETip: A visual schedule\nis something that can always be available to a student in an age appropriate\nway.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003EWhile a younger student can use\npictures, an older student can be following a text-based to-do list.\u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/i\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cu\u003EClassroom Setup\u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/u\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nIn ABA we’re all about the interactions between the\nenvironment and behavior. \u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003ESo wouldn’t\nit make sense to set up the environment for the behavior we want to see?\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003EIn a classroom, this means using the physical\nspace to set your students up for success. \u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003EYou can use dividers to block off areas that\nbecome distracting.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003EYou can create an\narea in the classroom that is used for calming down and regulation.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003EStrategic planning can be as simple as making\nsure that your student’s materials are easily accessible to minimize traveling\naround the room (which can result in unwanted behaviors).\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003EIs the student having difficulty transitioning\nfrom circle time back to his desk? Put his desk as close as possible to where\ncircle time occurs.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003EDoes the student\nneed frequent breaks? \u003C\/span\u003ESo he sat in his chair...and I\ntried to play...put all my effort into being fun...and he signed “more” which\nwas in his repertoire.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003EI provided more\nof the toy...NOPE, wrong...tried more of another toy and again, wrong.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003ESo I moved away and instructed him to “Show\nme”...and he went straight for my apple.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp;\n\u003C\/span\u003EHe’d never had an apple in my room, so a request for recurrence was not\nappropriate, but he was definitely showing a clear preference - more clear than\nI had seen in the past.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003ESo I asked (not\nexpecting an answer), “Do you want to eat apple?”, and he responded,\n“eat”.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/span\u003EI quickly checked with mom, then\nallowed a bite.\u003Cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003E\u0026nbsp;
